Did you know that United Way of Palm Beach County was formed in response to a hurricane?
Following the devastating 1928 hurricane, community leaders recognized the need for a unified effort to respond to human needs. In 1929, our United Way was created, then known as the Community Chest. And, 90 years later, it is still true that challenging times such as natural disasters, bring us all together. A great recent example of that is the effort made by United Way in partnership with several other community partners, including Catholic Charities, the Quantum Foundation, the Community Foundation and many more, to assist residents and nonprofits that were impacted by Hurricane Irma. More than $1.2 million was distributed locally to help with long-term recovery efforts.
The way these important relationships were leveraged to do the most good in the most impactful way for Hurricane Irma relief is the same way that United Way collaborates with our community to solve issues year-round. Last fiscal year we raised more than $16 million dollars to meet our community’s greatest needs, but even more impactful is that the actual reach of those dollars exceeded $22 million, helping a quarter of a million residents! That is the strength of United Way – making donor dollars go further to help even more of our residents who need it the most.
All this work could not have been completed over the years without the commitment and dedication of our donors and volunteers, who are truly the cornerstone of this organization. As we celebrate our 90th anniversary in 2019, and an astonishing total of $300 million raised and distributed right here in Palm Beach County, we are also celebrating YOU! We would like to recognize and honor our longtime donors for their generous contributions that demonstrate their belief in our mission and create lasting change in our community.
