REPORTS TO: Vice President for Hunger Relief

Purpose

Recognizing the unacceptable consequences of local hunger, United Way of Palm Beach County (UWPBC) and the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, backed by 183 local organizations, convened the Hunger Relief Project and created a comprehensive plan to reduce local hunger. Our project addresses hunger in our community, improving access to nutritious food for our residents. Project focus: community empowerment using sustainable solutions. The year-round Hunger Relief VISTA member will work in partnership with UWPBC Hunger Relief team and the Glades Hunger Relief Work Group to focus on projects in the Glades area: Healthy Corner Stores, SNAP Outreach, Pantry System, FFA School Gardens, data gathering, outreach, project coordination, oversight, and management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with recruitment, training, and coordinating of 10 Summer AmeriCorps VISTAs
  • Weekly check in with host organizations for Summer AmeriCorps VISTAs
  • Monitor achievement of performance measures for Summer AmeriCorps VISTAs bi-weekly and keep records of progress.
  • Assist with ongoing geographic assessment of pantry system in the Glades
  • Create and Implement SNAP and Fresh Access Bucks program at farmers markets and corner stores located in the Glades
  • Communicate with agencies that serve the Glades community to increase SNAP client participation in the Glades
  • Support FFA /School Garden Farmers Market in the Glades
  • Assess resources inside and outside of the Hunger Relief Task force community to create an action plan toward alleviating senior hunger in the Glades (western Palm Beach County)
  • Develop Senior Hunger Relief Volunteer Program for the Glades as needed, coordinating with the Senior/Childhood Hunger AmeriCorps VISTA
  • Publicize summer meal programs for children and recruit new sites to host summer meal programs in the Glades
  • Inventory faith based and other community hunger outreach programs in the Glades and galvanize those efforts
  • Educate the Glades community about the Hunger Relief Plan with a focus on alleviating childhood/senior hunger
  • Other duties as assigned
