Student Urgent Relief Fund
We know $500 dollars can stand between a student and post-secondary success or failure. For students, these emergencies often arrive as a flat tire, automobile accident, broken glasses, or emergency dental work. These crises can put students in a vulnerable state where they may experience an inability to access necessary medical care, purchase food, or even suffer homelessness. Alleviating a financial emergency can help students on their path to progress through higher education.
Achieve Palm Beach County believes in supporting students throughout their journeys to obtaining an education beyond high school. The Student Urgent Relief Fund (SURF) serves to alleviate some of the financial hardship that comes from emergency situations by providing students with mini-grants of up to $500 to help them stay on their academic paths.
This program is currently offered at Palm Beach State College, where 66% of the county’s low-income high school students enroll after graduation. In conjunction with their Panther Empowerment Resource Center, we leverage community resources to provide emergency student relief and create an additional layer of care for students.
Ava’s Success Story:
Ava was involved in a car accident that forced her to quit her job. The receipt of a SURF mini grant enabled her to pay one month’s rent. She recovered, regained employment, and went on to earn a 4.0 GPA that semester. She expects to receive her associate degree soon and plans to pursue a degree in nursing.
About Achieve Palm Beach County: The purpose of Achieve Palm Beach County (APBC) is to ensure post-secondary access and success. APBC’s vision is that every Palm Beach County high school graduate completes a post-secondary credential within six years of high school graduation. United Way of Palm Beach County is the host organization for Achieve Palm Beach County.
