Family Weekend Backpack Match Opportunity
Food insecurity puts tremendous stress on families. Studies show that hunger greatly affects a child’s performance and behavior in school: children are more likely to have lower math scores, repeat a grade, and are tardy and absent more frequently. During the school year, there are 99,000 children enrolled in the School District of Palm Beach County’s free and reduced lunch program. Many of these children don’t have enough food daily and often go without eating any nutritious food over the weekend.
United Way of Palm Beach County was awarded a three-year grant from The Jim Moran Foundation which will help us feed hundreds of local children on the weekends during the 2019-2022 school years! In partnership with The Jim Moran Foundation, the School District of Palm Beach County, local after school programs, and Pan Florida Challenge, we will provide Family Weekend Backpacks containing healthy, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to nearly 850 local children and their families, to ensure they get enough food on weekends and holidays.
We know there are more needs to be met, so The Jim Moran Foundation has challenged us to raise $15,000 to help even more children have healthy meals on the weekends!
If we raise these additional funds by August 9, the foundation will match the $15,000 making a total of $30,000 for even more weekend backpacks, which will feed a total of 122 children and their families for weekends during the school year.
Thank you for helping us feed even more children with this matching grant!
