United Way of Palm Beach County and its primary partner, The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offer free tax-preparation service to the residents of our community. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Palm Beach County has been a success story for more than a decade and has gained national attention because it helps families to achieve financial stability and self-sufficiency. VITA is a flagship IRS initiative for more than 40 years and is designed to promote and support free tax preparation service for the underserved, in both urban and non-urban locations. Service is targeted to low-to-moderate- income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking and focus on those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
The key factor for VITA’s success is its volunteers. United Way provides free training, and all VITA sites are staffed with IRS Certified VITA Volunteers to prepare tax returns in the program. Volunteers are asked to commit to working a minimum of four hours per week at a VITA site during the filing season.
We need the support of the community in spreading the word of this free tax preparation service.
There are 16 sites located throughout the county from Boca Raton to Jupiter, and out west to Belle Glade. Many sites offer day, weekend and night hours.
In addition to traditional face-to-face tax preparation, Palm Beach County residents have the option of filing a simple return through MyFreeTaxes, a secure and free site.
