    Help Working Families Succeed!

    The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is an invaluable service United Way of Palm Beach County has been providing to the community for more than 23 years. It offers services to individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes who are eligible for tax credits. The program has prepared 203,086 tax returns, yielding over $308 million in refunds, and provided an estimated $459 million economic impact for Palm Beach County.

    VITA Volunteers

    Last year, we recruited, trained, and deployed 141 volunteers. Volunteer participation resulted in nearly 7,689 volunteer hours and an in-kind value in excess of $277,889.

    Volunteers are the key to the VITA Program’s success.

    Next tax season, we will be entering the program’s 24th year of service. United Way needs your help recruiting 200 volunteers! A commitment of four hours per week is required during tax season. We offer 14 VITA convenient site locations throughout Palm Beach County and a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

    Volunteering for the VITA Program is an extremely rewarding opportunity! No experience is required and there are opportunities that don’t involve preparing taxes.

    VITA Volunteer Opportunities

    All VITA volunteers will receive a background check upon completion of training and certification.

    Greeter
    • Welcome taxpayers and oversee the sign-in process
    • Conduct initial screening of taxpayers

    Tax Preparer
    • Meet with taxpayer to gather information, review documentation and prepare tax return

    Site Coordinator
    • Manage VITA site and volunteers
    • Provide support, answer questions and provide quality review of tax returns

    Commitment

    Minimum of 4 hours per week

    • Training and successful completion of test required
    • Site locations available from Boca Raton to Jupiter and out west to Belle Glade
    • Hours vary per site, flexible scheduling is available (weekdays, weekends, evenings)

    • Advanced Level Test Certification

    Site Coordinators

    Experienced tax preparers successfully complete:

    • Volunteer Standards of Conduct Training
    • Intake & Interview and Quality Review Training
    • Review of updated Tax Law and TaxSlayer Software Training
    • Site Coordinator Administrative Training
    • Advanced Level Test Certification and Health Saving Account module.

    Get Your Taxes Filed Free

    Households with an income of $80,000 or less qualify for free tax preparation services at one of our VITA sites.
