Disaster Volunteer Opportunity

One of our goals at United Way is to increase engagement of volunteers in between disasters.Ê We have a great opportunity for volunteers below!

The Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management is conducting two routine field drills. Volunteer actors are needed to play the role of evacuees, specifically evacuees who would be leaving their homes and businesses in other counties during a nuclear power plant emergency.Ê The details are as follows:

Who is needed?

We are seeking approximately 100 people to assist.Ê We seek adult volunteers with privately owned vehicles, capable of walking one half (1/2) mile, and who are affiliated with organizations that are recognized by Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management.

What needs to be done?

The volunteers will:

  • drive their cars through a water rinse station
  • exit their vehicles and get registered by deputies
  • get monitored for simulated radioactive contamination
  • simulate technical decontamination techniques
  • simulate participation in public health field actions
  • ride on Palm Tran buses between field stations
  • provide feedback to exercise designers & controllers

Where is this taking place?

Both exercises will take place at Okeeheelee Park – 7500 Forest Hill Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL, 33413

When is this happening?

  • The dates of the two exercises are: February 05, 2019 & February 26, 2019
  • Both events will begin at 9:30am and last until approximately 1:00pm

Why is this being done?

These routine exercises are required by FEMA as part of the Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program

Do I get anything in return?

Yes!Ê Those participating will get a Division of Emergency Management certificate of participation and the satisfaction of helping improve the countyÕs response to a nuclear power plant emergency.
