If you are at least 70.5 years old and have a Traditional IRA, then you’re eligible to make a tax-free donation to United Way of Palm Beach County directly from your IRA, also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).*
The year you turn 72, Traditional IRA holders must withdraw a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). QCDs can help you meet your RMD and are tax free, even if you don’t itemize deductions on your tax return.
They also lower Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), which can help you to stay in a lower tax bracket, reduce or eliminate the taxation of Social Security or other income, and remain eligible for deductions and credits that might be lost if you had to declare the RMD amount as income.
A Bequest allows you to specify a gift to United Way as part of your estate plan through a will or a trust. Bequests can be given as a percentage of your estate, or a specific dollar amount or asset.
Charitable Gift Annuities provide a structured, stable stream of income for yourself and your family. When you transfer property to United Way of Palm Beach County, we pay you a fixed income for life, some of which may be tax-free. Charitable Gift Annuities may be established with a gift of cash or appreciated securities.
A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to make a gift to a trust and provide that income from the trust to United Way of Palm Beach County for a fixed period of years. The gift is then returned to you or your heirs at the end of the period of years.
A Charitable Remainder Trust allows you the flexibility of making a gift and receiving an income stream for yourself or your family over a set period of time. When the gift period concludes, United Way receives the balance of the gift.
Gifts of retirement assets enable you to meet your philanthropic goals while enabling your heirs to avoid income and estate taxes on these assets. United Way may be named a sole, partial or contingent beneficiary of qualified retirement plans and life insurance policies.
An insurance policy may be transferred to United Way of Palm Beach County sole ownership with United Way of Palm Beach County as sole beneficiary by the donor. The policy’s value is a charitable contribution the year of transfer. United Way of Palm Beach County may also be named as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
Gifts of real estate property may be given outright or as an undivided partial interest in property, or a donor may choose to give a remainder interest in property. The donor may give their residence, vacation property or farm.
You can contribute a personal residence or farm to United Way of Palm Beach County and continue to occupy the property until death, subject to the approval of the Finance Committee.
