Turn Up Your Impact in 2021. The Time to Mentor is Now!

Posted January 13, 2021

“Change multiplies each time someone is inspired by greater possibilities. It starts with someone like you committing to one act of support, which motivates someone else to advocate for progress. And then it builds, from one connection to the next, until entire communities are moved to action. That’s the power of mentoring — both mentor and mentee grow together, seeing the world through each other’s eyes.” – MENTOR

With all that our world is facing today, it’s more important than ever for kids to have a caring adult in their life who will encourage and empower them through real life decisions. Right now in Palm Beach County, 1,050 kids are waiting to be matched with a mentor just like you.

We see you – you’re interested in changing a kid’s life, but you’ve got some big questions about becoming a mentor. You’ve got what it takes (hint: just being you!), but here’s glimpse into the meaningful and fun journey of mentorship.

What Does It Take to Be a Mentor?

All you need to do is show up, be present, and be yourself.

It is probably safe to say at some point we all wondered about our purpose. As humans, it’s not uncommon to doubt that we have what it takes for a certain role. Whether it’s becoming a parent, passing that test, getting that promotion – or being a mentor. Often we hear “What does it take to be a mentor? I just don’t know if I am qualified.” Our response is usually the same. Why would you not be qualified? Your unique life experiences will help a kid navigate their path and overcome obstacles.

Being a mentor is being a listener, a guide, a support, a cheerleader, providing insight, and fostering success in others. Whether it was a coach, a teacher, or neighbor, at some point we all have had a mentor who believed in us and saw our potential. It’s your turn to be that person for a child in our community!

What is the Time Commitment for Mentoring?

One hour a week is all it takes to make an impact.

United Way has over 50 mentor partners in our network that provide flexible opportunities for mentoring. Whether you prefer to meet with your mentee over lunch, on the weekends, or virtually, one of our partners has a program that will work with your schedule.

We ask that you commit to mentorship for one year. Most of the time we see mentoring relationships last for years! But, a one-year commitment is essential for building a strong mentoring relationship.

What Can I Expect from Mentoring?

We can guarantee that you will change two lives through mentorship – both you and your mentee will experience incredible fulfillment.

It’s normal to go into mentoring being unsure of what impact it will make, not realizing that you have the opportunity to create a positive shift in the life of a young person- impacting generations of people to come.

Every single human has a purpose. If you don’t know what that purpose is yet, you will find it through mentoring.

Turn up your impact. Strengthen our community. Change their world. The time to mentor is now!
